15 Years of Home-Start in the South Hams

Home-Start South Hams, Plymouth & Tavistock are celebrating 15 years of community based family support this year. The service was set up by a dedicated group of Trustees in 1999. Since then it has offered one-to-one befriending and mentoring support to over 1,000 families with a child under 5, trained more than 350 local volunteers, expanded to offer support in Tavistock and Plymouth and raised nearly one million pounds to fund the work.

Some of the original Trustees are still involved in the management of the Scheme. The day-to-day running of the service is undertaken by a hard working staff team, who support the amazing home visiting volunteers. The volunteers, around 80 at present, are the service.
The Scheme has seen the needs of the community evolve over the years with families facing ever more complex issues, including rural isolation, depression and mental health difficulties, financial difficulties and relationship breakdown.
Once matched to a family a volunteer offers emotional and practical support for a couple hours a week over an extended period of usually around a year. Support is managed and monitored by a paid Coordinator with 90% of families reporting an improvement in their situation as a result of support.

But it’s not only the families who benefit from the service. All volunteers are trained for an initial 40 hours and receive ongoing support, supervision and training. Over the past 5 years volunteers have been offered accredited training options and career development support which has resulted in over 40% going on to gain a recognized qualification, secure an educational placement or get a job.

So, this year we are celebrating all of our successes with a very special Choir Concert starring the Military Wives Choir Plymouth and the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir. The event will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday 29th March at St Andrews Church, Plymouth. Tickets, which will soon be on sale at all Lawson’s stores (Ivybridge, Plymouth, Totnes and Tavistock) and Kingsbridge Tourist Information Centre, will be £12.

The event is intended not only as a celebration but also to raise awareness of our service and the fact that, after fifteen wonderful years, we are currently facing an uncertain future with our funding due to run out before the end of this year.

Mine has been a drip drip situation but I now get great pleasure from the fact that my 'mum' is going out occasionally with a girlfriend for some fun!
