Press release:

Family support charity saved from closure by Big Lottery Grant

A local family support charity has been saved from closure after being given a major financial boost from the Big Lottery Reaching Community fund. The scheme, Home-Start South Hams, Plymouth & Tavistock, which offers one-to-one befriending and mentoring support to families who are struggling was facing closure at the end of this year, despite a steady increase in referrals.

Andrea Chandler, Scheme Manager said, “Not only are we now able to guarantee our service for the next three years but the £370,000 grant means that we can expand our service to meet the demand.” The scheme which currently offers support across the South Hams, Plymouth and Tavistock plans to extend its reach to take in Okehampton.

One mum who received support when suffering with depression after the birth of her second child told of the difference it made to her. “I felt very alone when my mental health support worker suggested Home-Start. I was given a lovely lady and I was gob-smacked that there were real people who just wanted to help me. I called her my ‘Mary Poppins’ as she was so amazing. She was my rock and as a result I grew stronger and found my feet.”

The next challenge faced by the scheme is recruiting new volunteers. Zoe Bell, Coordinator explained. “We are always looking for people with parenting experience who have a couple of hours a week to spare and now that we know we have a future we are very keen to hear from anyone who is interested in volunteering. It’s a great way to meet new people and even boost your C.V. Our 8 week (one day a week), 40 hour training courses will start in September.”

If you are interesting in finding out more about the service or volunteering contact Andrea on 01752 346039.

Additional Information:

Home-Start South Hams is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee and was established in 1999 and expanded to offer its service to Plymouth and Tavistock in 2010.
The charity believes that every child deserves the best start in life and that parents are the best people to ensure they get it. However, there are times when, for a variety of reasons, this can be difficult. Offering one-to-one peer, befriending support is the corner stone of our service, which has a proven track record of over 40 years.
All volunteers have parenting experience and undertake 40 hours of initial training. They are offered regular on-going training and have supervision every 8 weeks. Accreditation and career development support options are offered.
Volunteers visit the family they are matched to every week for around 2 hours and offer emotional and practical support. Support is usually for up to a year and focuses on enabling through building confidence, supporting access and helping a family to develop networks. The aim is to build the families emotional and financial resilience. Our ‘stepping stones’ model of group work aims to engage families using intensive support and a gentle approach with a view to signposting and supporting them to access wider support services.
The service is run by a Management Committee of 6 trustees and 9 advisory members and the day to day work is undertaken by a Scheme Manager, supported by volunteers, coordinators and administration staff.
